Nowadays, it is not easy to get to see hanok-a traditional Korean-style house- between huge apartments in the city. However, there is one place where you can find hanok and experience Korea’s history. Located in Seoul, Northern village is a hanok housing where hanoks are crowded together. People actually live in these hanoks so it is easy to undergo the lives of Koreans. History of Northern village

Northern village was built between Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung and Jongmyo from ancient times. It got its name because it was located above Cheonggyecheon and Jongro. Northern village is a traditional housing place in Seoul with over 600 years of history. The preservation of diverse branch shaped alleys show 600 years of history. In ancient times, because Senior officers and Royal families lived in this area, the Northern village was known for its advanced residential district.     Northern village’s houses

Even though Northern village was a place where all the rich people lived, it is not easy to find large hanoks. Rather, most of the houses are small in size and the main house and the Sarangchae(reception room for entertaining male guests) are surrounded together centering the yard. The hanoks in Northern village was built very closely side by side to solve housing shortage problems during Japan’s colonial ruling period. Although the hanoks are still very closely together, it has experienced various changes. People changed old wood into new ones, made double doors, and used the boiler heating system. As a result, hanoks are changing into a form where modern and tradition is harmonized together wonderfully. Programs to enjoy

At the Northern village there are a variety of activities and programs anyone can enjoy. There are many hanok experiencing halls where you can enjoy Korea’s traditional culture and go through hanok lifestyle. There are classes at the Northern village culture center, where you can learn about calligraphy, dyeing clothes, embroidery and lots more. There are classes available at Saturdays for people who are working at weekdays.

What do you think? Northern village in Seoul is a place where the traditional and the modern harmonize together, a place where it is experiencing endless developments, a place with wonderful memories and a place with youth and romance. Visit Korea and experience diversity here in Northern village!
